The Richard J. GRAHAM (pseudonym of Paul TINCHANT) collection of ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins, including a splendid series of Roman bronze medallions

Foreword:

"It is not often given to mortal man more than once in his lifetime to achieve his heart's desire, and whether for a collector or for a professional the cataloguing of a really first class collection of ancient coins must, perforce, too often remain a dream. It has therefore been my good fortune tobe entrusted with the writing of the present catalogue, for the coins themselves are, for once, all that may be desired. What is so remarkable about this collection is the state of preservation of the coins themselves. In the Greek series, not many of the great rarities are present, but a pleasanter selection of the less rare pieces in better condition has not appeared on the market for many years. Many a present-day collector has not seen such well-stmck, bold specimens, including some notable bronze coins, so that competition will certainly be keen. As to the Roman series, the most important part of the collection, here is all that one could wish. Republican denarii in the finest condition, aurei of exceptional merit, sestertii with lovely patinas, antoniniani as fresh as the day they left the mint, and a host of others. Two other series must also be mentioned. The Byzantine gold which, like the Greek, lacks the sensational rarities but displays what condition can really be, and lastly a wonderful run of medaillons in bronze, many of which come from the collections of the late (and great) Sir John Evans and S ir Arthur Evans, via the famous Ars Classica sale XVII of 1934. The figure of Richard J. Graham is mysterieus and will ever remain so. Like the equally shadowy benefactress of the museum of Fine Arts, Boston, his memory will always be enshrined in his collection. So be it." L.S. Forrer (junior).
